Today’s IEEE 802.11 group of Wi-Fi standards are the world's most widely deployed wireless computer networking standards, used in most home and office networks to allow laptops, printers, smartphones and a host of other popular consumer electronics products to talk to each other and access the Internet without the necessity of being connected by way of traditional wires.
More specifically, IEEE 802.11 is a set of media access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) specifications for implementing wireless local area network (WLAN) computer communication in the 900 MHz and 2.4, 3.6, 5, and 60 GHz frequency bands, that has continued to evolve since the official publication of the first wireless LAN standard in IEEE Std. 802.11-1997 and many subsequent enhancements.
The 2007 version of the Standard merged 8 amendments to the legacy 802.11-1997 (802.11a, b, d, e, g, h, i, j) with the base standard. Upon approval on March 8, 2007, it was renamed to the then-current base standard IEEE 802.11-2007.
The IEEE 802.11n 2009 amendment to the 2007 version of the Standard added multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and several other enhancements, and was formally adopted as IEEE Std. 802.11n-2009. More recently, the IEEE has further enhanced WLAN throughput in the 802.11ac, a 2013 amendment to the then-current base standard IEEE 802.11-2012, which in turn was published to merge ten amendments (802.11k, r, y, n, w, p, z, v, u, s) with the 2007 base standard.
