Istituto Superiore Mario Boella and SISVEL S.p.A. enter into a cooperation agreement in the field of patent protection and valorization to coincide with the World Intellectual Property Day (IP Day 2012)

Turin (Italy), April 26, 2012

ISMB and SISVEL have chosen the symbolic date of April 26, the 12th World Intellectual Property Day, to announce the signing of a cooperation agreement in the field of patent protection and valorization. Several research topics of mutual interest have already been identified and both partners undertake to set up joint projects oriented towards the creation of new technology which will then be protected by patents.

The first research areas of common interest identified by both partners include: mobile telephony, home entertainment, indoor and outdoor localization, intelligent transport system and green technology.

Both partners will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to create efficiency in research, to better define the scope of technical innovations worthy of protection, and to increase their value with the most appropriate tools of Intellectual Property.

Due to this agreement, ISMB has also transferred its entire patent portfolio, already filed in whole or in part by the company, to Sisvel which will manage it by maximizing its economic value. Mr. Giovanni Colombo, Director of the Istituto Boella, says “The ability to create, preserve and enhance knowledge is vital for every institution. This must be created by strengthening research activities and by fostering a more innovative spirit. Our purpose is to meet these objectives even through a joint action in the fields of ICT standardization and innovation at European level".

"This agreement creates at a regional level a real combination of excellence to develop the most promising technological trends. The results achieved will be protected by patents and maximized in their value in order to fund further innovation" adds Gian Antonio Pancot, CEO of Sisvel. "The collaboration between SISVEL and ISMB will develop research activities in specialist streams which with the support of other companies and R&D centers will be able to compete with the increasingly tough international competition now present even in the research and development area".

IP Day

April 26 is the World Intellectual Property Day (IP Day). This date was chosen by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as the anniversary of its founding in 1970. The IP Day was celebrated for the first time in 2001.

About ISMB

Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) is a research & innovation center operating in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) domain. Founded in 2000 by Compagnia di San Paolo and Politecnico di Torino, today ISMB relies on the technological expertise of around 150 researchers who work closely with companies, academia and Public Administration.

ISMB is organized in Research Areas focused on core sectors of ICT: Navigation Technologies, Pervasive Technologies, Multi-Layer Wireless Solutions, Photonics, cloud computing and Information System Architectures and SW Technologies, Information Management and Innovation Development.

In 2010, ten years after its founding, ISMB extended its activities to process innovation, focusing on the main themes of the European agenda. Such an evolution aims to maximize technological excellence and the results achieved by its Research Areas in Strategic Programs which are interdisciplinary by nature. Smart Energy, Smart City and Smart Health are the strategic programs tackled by ISMB and they represent the first step of a broader action aimed at high-value social projects.

About Sisvel

Founded in 1982, the Sisvel Group has become a world leader in managing intellectual property and maximizing the value of patent rights.

Sisvel has a long history of managing successful patent portfolios including those related to the audio compression standards known as MP3 and MPEG Audio, as well as widespread technologies, such as “On Screen Display”, which displays an on-screen bar that adjusts volume or brightness, and “Automatic Tuning & Sorting System”, a platform for the tuning and automatic storage, in the right sequence, of television stations (e.g., RAI 1 button 1, etc...). More recently, Sisvel was chosen as the administrator of important patent pools (collections of patents whose use rights are acquired with a single license) including the standard for Digital Terrestrial TV (DVB-T) and its evolution in high definition (DVB-T2). Sisvel is currently in the process of creating patent pools for LTE, the so-called fourth-generation mobile phones standard, and DVB-C2, for cable television.

Since 2008, the Sisvel Group has been supported by the services of Sisvel Technology, a company dedicated to research, development and technical consultancy, which provides strategic advice to other companies in assessing the economic and technical potential of patents. In addition, Sisvel Technology actively develops its own new patented technologies.
