Nokia is taking on another US streaming giant in an ongoing campaign to enforce its video coding patent portfolio. On Friday, news emerged that the Finnish licensor had launched enforcement actions against Paramount Global, which operates platforms including Paramount+, in the United States and Brazil. Back in March, Nokia settled a multijurisdictional dispute over streaming technologies with Amazon.

“From my perspective, we really took our time thinking this through before filing,” Nokia licensing VP Vipul Nehrotra wrote in a LinkedIn post announcing the lawsuits, continuing: “We've been at the forefront of video technology for more than 30 years, and we can’t let our foundational technologies be used without fair compensation.”

Elsewhere, the ECJ ruling in BSH Hausgerate v. Electrolux continues to re-draw the patent litigation map. Last week, the Hamburg Local Division issued the first UPC injunction with effect in Spain, which is not among the court’s 18 member states. This latest instance of long-arm jurisdiction follows a July order extending an injunction to the UK market.

There were also several new litigation filings in Europe involving members of the Access Advance HEVC patent pool and a pair of China-based defendants – Transsion and Hisense. And we published a free-to-read interview with Seoul-based Sisvel executive Injoon Song, who has played a leading role in starting up patent monetisation programmes within some of South Korea’s biggest corporates.

Please note that inclusion of a piece in the list below does not signify agreement with what is stated in the linked article, just that we believe it is of interest and worth pointing out.
