30 June 2021- Xiaomi and Sisvel today announced the companies have entered into a license agreement covering the standard essential patents of Mitsubishi Electric and Sisvel in the field of mobile communication. This deal brings to an end the global dispute between the three companies, which has spanned the courts in China, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom since 2019.

Xiaomi is an active participant in the 5G standard being adopted around the world., and Xiaomi has developed its own large portfolio of patents. Although Xiaomi respects truly innovative invention rights, Xiaomi remains exceptionally judicious in deciding which portfolios have both true innovation and relevance to Xiaomi. The cellular patent portfolio of Sisvel and Mitsubishi Electric licensed to Xiaomi includes over 120 patent families (comprising over 1800 individual patents) directed towards cellular standards.

“We are pleased to reach a deal to settle all disputes with Sisvel. Although litigations often make parties confrontational, I have always been optimistic in finding the right value drivers to bring parties to negotiation table.” commented Paul Lin, Vice President of Global Business Development and IP Strategy. “By focusing on the sales of Xiaomi in relation to the Sisvel and Mitsubishi’s portfolio, we concluded a deal that worked for each company’s interest” , Lin added.

“We are delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement with Xiaomi. Despite the difficulties presented by the Covid-19 pandemic and the adversarial dynamic inherent in the litigation process, we have been impressed with the professional and effective approach of Xiaomi’s licensing team in coming to this deal.” said Mattia Fogliacco, President of Sisvel. He continues: “Today’s announcement demonstrates that industry leaders such as Xiaomi recognize the value of the Sisvel and Mitsubishi Electric portfolios, and that Sisvel remains committed to find win-win solutions when parties participate in open and constructive dialogue.”
