There are over 450 cities globally with populations of one million plus. Making more of them ‘smart’ is a major challenge for public policy. At the purely technological level, this involves huge deployment of IoT solutions and seamless cooperation between companies in different sectors and verticals, as well as between industry and government. In a Sisvel Insights article published last week, Jacob Schindler explained why many delegates at the recent LES International meeting in Singapore believed transparent and comprehensive pools are the best way to solve the patent licensing challenges this complexity poses. Also featuring in this must-read article is a discussion of indemnifications. They too were widely discussed in Singapore, with growing acknowledgement that questionable practices by some module makers are making things difficult for implementers.

Elsewhere, Shanghai Langbo announced it will pause its internal licensing activities to focus on building a 6G SEP portfolio, while a group of EU member states – including some of the bloc’s biggest – urged the European Commission not to withdraw the SEP licensing regulation. There was news, too, of a big-name departure from Nokia.

Please note that inclusion of a piece in the list below does not signify agreement with what is stated in the linked article, just that we believe it is of interest and worth pointing out.
