"Teletext" is the technical name given to the well known service, available in Europe, for transmitting information visualized on a television screen as text pages and simple graphics. In Italy, for example, it is known by various trade names which vary according to the content provider supplying the information, "Televideo" for RAI, "Mediavideo" for Mediaset, "La7video" for La7, and so on.
With standard teletext, the user must select a page by consecutively inputting the three digits that make up the desired page number on the remote control. To move to the next page, the user presses a button on the remote. If the next page contains information, the television set displays that information on the screen. However, if the page contains no information, the television set waits for it indefinitely and a blank page appears on the screen.
TOPteletext is a significant improvement of the standard teletext service that results in more user-friendly navigation of available pages. It allows the user to jump directly to a desired page and/or to skip blank pages. The user selects a particular teletext page by pressing colored keys on the television's remote control.
TOPteletext also improves the teletext service for broadcasters transmitting teletext signals by minimizing the workload of the editorial staff supplying content.
