Sisvel launches fund to help SMEs license cellular IoT patents
Luxembourg, 18th December 2025 -- Sisvel has launched a new fund that will help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) become licensed under its Cellular IoT pool at low or even no cost. The initiative is designed to enable SMEs to enter the market with licensed products in a way that reduces their IP risk while minimising their monetary exposure.
Under the initiative, SME companies that agree to take a Sisvel Cellular IoT licence will pay no royalties on their first 2,000 units sold during the initial two years of the licence. Instead, Sisvel will pay the relevant royalties to the patent owners from a special fund it has set aside for this purpose. The offer is available to SMEs on a first-come first-served basis while funds last.
This programme, which applies globally, is designed to help SMEs operating at small volumes as they enter IoT markets by providing a safe harbour from royalty payments and third-party patent enforcement. This will allow them to focus on what matters: creating products, testing customer demand and refining their offerings. In other words, the freedom to learn, grow and build commercial traction while preparing to meet their IP obligations.
Once a company has sold more than 2,000 units – or has enjoyed royalty-free sales for more than two years – it will be subject to the same transparent rates as other Sisvel Cellular IoT licensees. This ensures a level playing field for all.
Independent research has shown that the Sisvel Cellular IoT pool licence covers over half of relevant SEPs reading on NB-IoT and LTE-M technology. More than 30 world-leading innovators make their patents available through the programme.
IoT has been identified as a market in which SMEs will be key contributors to many of the solutions that will unlock the true value of the connected society. Since its founding in 2022, Sisvel Cellular IoT has pioneered several novel initiatives aimed at addressing the unique IoT landscape:
It has invested extensively in education to help smaller players understand SEP licensing.
It has set royalty rates at levels intended to encourage adoption of NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies.
It has worked with module makers to help provide frictionless licensing solutions to their large customer bases.
Most recently, it was one of the first signatories of a WIPO-inspired pledge to offer SMEs confidential mediation in the event of impasses over the licensing of the IoT standard essential patents Sisvel owns.
Today’s announcement is a further step towards supporting SMEs that may be new to SEP licensing.
“Sisvel is proud to unveil this initiative and stands ready to support companies that are taking the first steps in their licensing journey,” says Cellular IoT programme manager Sven Torringer. “We want to see cellular IoT technologies take off in the market. Our focus from day one has been to provide the certainty that businesses need to scale up. Our hope is that this fund opens the door for smaller and newer players to learn more about the licensing process and plan for successful growth.”
