The UK Supreme Court has agreed to hear Apple’s appeal against a $502 million-plus interest award made by the Court of Appeal of England and Wales to Optis Cellular in its patent infringement case against the iPhone giant. In this major ruling, a panel including the UK’s two most experienced patent judges – Lord Justices Arnold and Birss – upended a first-instance judgment that had almost entirely gone Apple’s way. Now, three Supreme Court justices – none of them a specialist patent judge – will decide whether Birss and Arnold were right.

The decision to grant the appeal, however, should not be seen as an indicator of a particular line of thought. It’s more about this being an important case, involving a large sum of money, in which new precedent needs to be confirmed, modified or struck down. To say that this is a watershed moment would be something of an understatement: the entire SEP world will be watching.

Elsewhere, LG Electronics became the latest licensee of the Wilus Wi-Fi 6 SEP portfolio. Sisvel played an advisory role in the deal, which represents another validation of the value of the South Korean R&D company’s patents. Qualcomm also announced its results for financial year 2025, with licensing income relatively flat; while new data reveals that The Hague has become the most popular non-German UPC local division.

Please note that the inclusion of a piece in the list below does not signify agreement with what is stated in the linked article – just that we believe it is of interest and worth flagging.
